It’s a universal system (free and/or subsidized) but don’t expect the same level of standards you may be used to coming from a Western European country. If you like quiet places do not go during July and August since people from Merida go and live there during the summer. Tomatoes are 75 cents for a little over two pounds. You SHOULD be able to travel wherever you want, and backpack through any country, but that’s not always the case, unfortunately.On the whole, Mexico is safe to travel for families. Throughout the peninsula, travelers should exercise increased caution.That’s not to say that crime doesn’t happen – it does, and like anywhere, you should be cautious and aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling to an unfamiliar place, and especially when traveling alone.That does say “exercise increased caution” – not “if you go there, you will be a victim of crime.” As of this writing, we’ve lived in Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico for almost ten months and have had zero incidents, or even close calls. Granted, I’m a big guy, at over six feet tall, but even our tiniest female friends feel safe here.So is Progreso Mexico safe? Some areas have increased risk. Write them down and keep the list with you. There is a market in the town that has nice items and souvenirs. Combined with the pungent salty air and gentle sea breeze, it’s nearly lulling me to sleep on my towel under one of the empty palapas on the oceanfront. One of the questions we’ve seen time and time again, and were concerned about before we came to Progreso is “Is Progreso Mexico Safe?”Most crimes here are crimes of opportunity, so don’t leave phones, bags, purses, wallets, etc.

Children are a big part of society and you’ll be well looked after if you travel there with your own in tow. Basically, it’s all about being sensible and avoiding any dangerous situations. And you never, never take your car into Mexico. Gang warfare is basically just that: violence between gangs.Yep, most visitors to Mexico are unaffected by crime thanks to how removed it is from touristy destinations.So as you’ve noticed by now, violence has been increasing in recent years due to warring gangs and drugs. Warring drug cartels have resulted in a high (and increasing) murder rate and violence. With a yearly average high temperature of 83 F and average low of 73 F, there are no bad beach days in this paradise. Avocados sell for less than $1 for two pounds. Yes, I believe Progreso is safe.Where to go, what to eat and more in and around ProgresoBut all that is at least four hours away by car from Progreso, which hasn’t had the same problems.But violent crime is particularly rare here. Avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.
