With the story already in mind and lyrics written beforehand, all that was left for the band to do was to create the music that would embody the epic journey of a group of vikings on sea during winter. The mixing is weird as well. One gigantic song, perfectly played, that seamlessly goes through 20 completely different genres of music. Even though it could be said that Winter's Gate feels like the most epic album Insomnium have crafted as of yet, it is also remarkably restrained at times, and is worthy of being called the band's most complete outing. This is a concept album based on the short story "Winter's Gate", written by Niilo Sevänen. I keep hearing bits of prog that I enjoy, nice guitar leads, solos, tremolos, catchy riffs, keyboards, piano, I never know what's coming next. Winter's Gate should be listened to patiently, in one hearing, and with lyrics, as it is only then that the magic held within begins to unravel in all its glory. Especially apparent is the attention the band have paid to the production, making sure that every leitmotif stands out and is available to the listener for future callbacks. The band of adventurers’ early return was drastically delayed by a horde of scurrilous Danes who attempted to intercept our heroes near the end of their long voyage. It MIGHT be a sticking point with me, but I'm hoping I can get past it. Limited to 100 copies.
