I read this play, "Circle Mirror Transformation" by Annie Baker today, and I loved it! It seeps into the exercises and the interstices between them, expressed more in the tone than what's actually said. The characters consist of a teacher and her four students: a teenage girl, a former actress brushing up on her craft, the teacher's husband, and a recently divorced carpenter. This production is a perfect marriage of script and director. In a final exercise, Lauren imagines herself meeting Schultz in 10 years and they tell each other what has transpired. The first amateur production in the UK will be at Hampton Hill Theatre in October 2020. Recently divorced, Schultz is shy, genial, and unused*Our system only provides suggested monologues or songs for select characters if we have matching monologues and song information in our database.Sign up today to unlock amazing theatre resources and opportunities.Gain full access to show guides, character breakdowns, auditions, monologues and more!Gain full access to show guides, character breakdowns, auditions, monologues and more! Riverside Theater opened its production of Circle Mirror Transformation last weekend, with Angie Toomsen directing. In this one small room, through these few seemingly trivial games, quiet wars are waged, emotional wounds are nursed, and healing is finally, slowly, able to begin. It was named one of the best plays of 2009-2010 in the latest edition of The Best Plays Theater Yearbook.
Circle Mirror Transformation By Annie Baker HOME, 14 March 2018 Acting is authenticity. In Annie Baker’s quiet masterpiece, Circle Mirror Transformation, the audience takes a transcendent journey … Set up the one-time or monthly amount that’s right for you.Much of the success of this production is how focused, attentive and giving this cast is with each other. An important note: "Circle Mirror Transformation," previously billed as running through Aug. 12, has been extended through Aug. 19. Her upbeat, encouraging intonations say it all. It's been a great year for, and with, Baker in the Bay Area. Really, it would be hard to do a play set in an acting class if it were otherwise.Toomsen sees the strengths in each of these performers and musters them to work quite well as a unit. The students are a variety of ages and types – one interesting choice Baker made is making the Marty’s husband, James, a student in the class. After a bitter breakup between Theresa and Schultz, for example, we shift to another acting exercise: Theresa is giving a monologue and the rest of class is watching her. We don't need to be told that she mostly teaches kids' arts-and-crafts sessions. We are looking at an acting class run by Marty (Amelia Bullmore) with help from her partner James (Anthony Ofoegbu). "Circle Mirror Transformation" starts out on the first day of acting class. Groups of 15 or more pay $5.00 per ticket for the Wednesday, March 9 performance. …For example, in Circle Mirror Transformation, in which characters are in an acting class and doing an exercise of pretending to be one another, Schultz is pretending to be Theresa and says, near the end of the Theresa monologue, “I don’t want my parents to die.” Then there is “a long pause while he thinks deeply about this.”
The story emerges slowly, as it might in life over the course of a six-week class. It gathered an Obie Award for Best New American Play and a special Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. Swanson and Paulsen have a fun little game at the beginning of Paulsen checking in nonverbally for approval throughout exercises he obviously views as silly, and this tension shifts from comic to tragic as it grows throughout the piece. Marty takes the "students" through various acting and dramatic exercises; they act like trees, beds and baseball gloves. In Shirley, Vermont, Marty, an acting teacher, holds an "Adult Creative Drama" class at the local community center. By the end of two hours so engrossing that you may not notice the lack of an intermission, we've come to know these people with unusual intimacy. Circle Mirror Transformation premiered in New York at Playwrights Horizons, won the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play and was voted one of the top ten plays of 2009 by the New York Times, Time Out New York, and The New Yorker.
