For a chain that was once the largest retailer in the country with close to 2500 stores as recently as 1994 it a shocking comedown.The number of Sears and Kmart stores that remain in business could be more than 10% less than the last numbers issued by their parent company, Transformco.That total of 161 (using the lower Kmart estimate) places the count at just over 11% lower than the last update issued by Transformco, the privately held company run by Eddie Lampert that bought the remnants of Sears Holdings out of bankruptcy court last year.
