Team World/Europe has won the Cup six times.Each singles match is determined based on a points system (with 0 for missing the shot entirely, 1 if the shot remains in play but outside the house, and higher points based on where the shooter eventually lands, up to a maximum of 5 points if the shooter reaches the button), and the team with the higher score wins the game. However, one would be hard pressed to dispute the competitiveness of the field and I hope it will be a good show in London, Ontario next January.Those appear to be solid points, but Americans and Asian teams were at the last Continental Cup in London, Ontario and the event seemed to go over well (and actually provided an interesting preview of the Olympics in South Korea).Ultimately you have to remember that the Continental Cup is a Canadian event funded through Canadian sponsorship. All 24 players on each side were required to play in either a sweeping or throwing role in this format. Competition is expected to be tight as some of the world’s top curlers are in London for the 2020 Continental Cup.
More Canadian content brings in more ticket sales and more TSN viewers.Ultimately, the Continental Cup is an exhibition and it would be nice to see a greater diversity of teams participating and interacting. The last (and only) time the Continental Cup went with this approach was in 2015.Looking anecdotally, some curling viewers in Canada have said they've grown tired of seeing the same teams on TV over and over. Although the overall caliber of American teams is lower than Canada's, U.S. teams usually hold their own at events like this (at least in the years that I've watched the event). We also didn't compete in 2015. The last was 2018. Team Europe approach next year. The continental cup was started in 2002. The Continental Cup of Curling will return to London, Ont., in 2020. Good #curling to all in 2020!As for the omission of Team USA, it's unfortunate and it certainly saps my enthusiasm as an American for the event.
